San Jose, CA — Festival Fright Nights at the Winchester Mystery House is dropping the linear, one-way haunted-house route it ran last year for an open festival format that lets guests explore the estate in any order. Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group detailed the change at its Midsummer Scream panel, where the 2026 event runs select nights from September 18 through November 1 in San Jose.

From a Linear Haunt to an Open Festival
“The biggest change this year is our new open festival format,” said Brett Bertolino, the 13th Floor vice president of experiential operations, at the company’s Midsummer Scream panel. Last year, guests walked the estate as a linear show, moving through three acts in order. “This year, we are opening up the estate and putting the experience into the hands of our guests, allowing them to explore the attractions in any order they wish to create their own unique journey,” Bertolino said.
The 2026 event spreads across four festival zones with 13 attractions and experiences, and the stories are built to connect. Guests who pay attention will find clues, characters, and details that cross between attractions and add up to a larger mystery about the evil consuming the estate. “This year’s Festival Fright Nights really is a true festival,” Bertolino said.
That framing is spreading across the industry, as haunts reposition themselves as explorable festivals rather than a single linear walkthrough. HAN has tracked the shift elsewhere, from ScareHouse, which returned in 2026 without building a traditional haunted house at all, to Eastern State Penitentiary, which reworked its haunt into the festival-style Halloween Nights and where Bertolino earlier worked on Terror Behind the Walls. 13th Floor CEO Chris Stafford framed the goal as guest agency over pure scares. “You don’t want to be just a casual observer in your entertainment,” he said, adding that “a good actor two feet away from you is always going to trump any type of tech that we could buy and put in a show.”
A 1926 Mystery and a New Cast
The 2026 story is set in 1926, four years after Sarah Winchester’s death, with something newly awakened at the estate. A new cast has moved in. Sarah’s loyal butler stays behind and tries to keep the house under control, his son Henry Harker goes missing during a game of hide-and-seek, Nina Nightshade tends the plants in the greenhouse, and The Collector patrols the darkest corners, dragging a heavy sack behind him.
The Attractions
Three main haunted attractions are included with all admission:
- The House of Spirits (new), which follows the butler as he uses ghost traps to fight the spirits overtaking the mansion.
- The Final Descent (reimagined), with the estate fallen and its consumed staff stalking the halls.
- The Root of All Evil, set in the greenhouse, where twisted roots reveal an ancient evil that has fed on the estate since before Sarah Winchester arrived.
Several add-on experiences go deeper:
- The Underhouse, following The Collector through the shadows.
- Harry Houdini Presents: Do Spirits Exist?, a live seance with the famous skeptic.
- Hide and Seek: The Lost Children (new), which leads guests into the mansion’s attic to search for the missing Henry.
- The Seance Society Speakeasy (new), a hidden bar behind Houdini’s traveling camp.
The festival zones also add a cider mill, a roast-your-own s’mores station, and midway games.
The Winchester Mystery House’s History
The venue does a lot of the work. Walter Magnuson of the Winchester Mystery House told the panel how Sarah Winchester inherited the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, bought an eight-bedroom farmhouse in 1886, and kept building it for 38 years with no clear plan before her death in 1922. The house opened for tours in 1923 and has drawn visitors from around the world since, which makes its real corridors, basements, and attics a ready-made set for an immersive haunt.
