Holiday Traditions

Trick-or-treating is not just for Halloween – the Norwegian tradition of Julebukking brings the door-to-door custom to the Christmas season. Similar to trick-or-treating, Julebukking involves a group of individuals in costumes arriving at their neighbors’ front doors demanding treats (or alcohol). Julebukkers traditionally arrive in the time between Christmas & New Year’s. In some variations of the celebration the group carries a goat head door to door – sometimes asking for candy, other times sticking around until the neighbor guesses the identity of the individuals in the costumes. In other versions, the person answering the door must quickly don their own goat costume and join the group on their adventures (apparently goat costumes are common household staples in that particular region). The significance of goat imagery in Julebukking stems from the mythical Norwegian Julebukk, or “Yule buck”, a small gift-bearing creature that looks like a goat.
