The house where Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother were killed in 1892 still stands at 230 Second Street in Fall River, Massachusetts, and it is open to the public as a museum and bed-and-breakfast. Netflix’s “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” has sent a lot of people looking it up, and yes, you can visit: tour it by day, join a ghost hunt at night, or book one of its six rooms and sleep there.
Andrew and Abby Borden were killed in the home on August 4, 1892. Andrew’s daughter Lizzie was tried for the killings and acquitted in 1893. The house is now run as a museum and inn by US Ghost Adventures, which bought it in 2021, and it bills itself as “America’s Most Haunted House.” The Netflix series that renewed interest this fall, a scripted dramatization and the fourth chapter of the Monster anthology, premiered September 17.
What you can do
The house is open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight. The daytime House Tour runs about 90 minutes and walks through every room, focused on the family, the 1892 case, and the trial that followed. After dark, the schedule turns to the building’s haunted reputation: a nightly outdoor ghost tour of Fall River, a two-hour ghost hunt on the first floor and in the basement, and an eight-hour overnight basement ghost hunt that runs from midnight to morning. There is also a guided tour of Oak Grove Cemetery, where the Bordens are buried, and a weekend Victorian tea. Tours book through the house’s website.
Staying overnight
The inn has six rooms across two suites and four bedrooms. Lizzie’s and Emma Borden’s rooms can be booked individually or combined as a suite for up to four guests. Nightly rates vary by room and date and run into the low-to-mid hundreds, and breakfast is an extra $20 per person. Groups can rent the whole house, which sleeps up to 20, and exclusive use of the building adds $1,500, or $2,000 in October. Current rates and availability are on the booking page.
Plan ahead
Fall River sits about an hour south of Boston and 20 minutes east of Providence, so the house works as a day trip or an overnight from either city. With the Netflix series drawing new interest, popular dates are booking further out than usual, so reserve a tour or a room before you make the drive.
