The event runs four walk-through haunted houses on six acres of the fairgrounds, with a bonus Frightmares & Oddities exhibit, live bands, and midway games. What Pirates of Emerson is
Pirates of Emerson is a fully-immersive haunted theme park, not a walk-through corn maze or a mall haunt. The event occupies six acres of the Alameda County Fairgrounds and stages four walk-through haunted houses with themed environments, roaming performers, and pyrotechnic effects. In 2025 the event operated with over 90 performers, working as seasonal independent contractors.
The event was founded in 1991 by the Fields family as a home haunt on Emerson Street in Fremont, and admission in the early years was donated to the Tri-City Homeless Shelter and local food banks. After several years on Emerson Street, the operation moved to a leased field in Fremont, then to the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton in 2010. It has run every Halloween season since founding, including 2020, when it pivoted to a drive-through format at $95 per car during the pandemic.
Where Pirates of Emerson fits in the Northern California Halloween market
Pirates of Emerson is the largest professional haunt in the San Francisco Bay Area outside of a theme park. Along with Festival Fright Nights at Winchester Mystery House, it anchors the Bay Area’s fall haunt calendar.
The event’s positioning is distinctly different from Southern California’s theme park haunts. It is not built around branded IP mazes, celebrity collaborations, or a media-tie-in schedule the way Fright Fest at Six Flags Magic Mountain, Knott’s Scary Farm, or Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood are. Instead, it is an operator-designed, family-run haunt that has built out its own house themes annually across 35 years, with a “fairground compound” footprint that theme parks cannot replicate.
The event has been recognized by the Travel Channel and AOL CityGuide in earlier years based on Facebook and reader votes, not juried awards. Its “nationally ranked” positioning traces to the operator’s own marketing language.
Getting there
- Address: Alameda County Fairgrounds, Gate 8 (corner of Bernal and Valley Avenue), Pleasanton, CA 94566.
- Rideshare drop-off address: Gate 8, 2005 Valley Avenue.
- Parking: The Alameda County Fairgrounds has over 10,000 parking spaces. Parking is paid, but Pirates of Emerson receives none of the parking revenue. Drop-offs are free. Additional parking is available in nearby business lots.
Accessibility
All haunted attractions at Pirates of Emerson are ADA-accessible. Guests using wheelchairs will need to cross gravel between attractions. Any stairs encountered inside the haunts have a wheelchair bypass, and staff can accompany a group if requested.
Age policy
- Recommended age: 13 and up.
- Guests under 16 must be accompanied by an individual 21 or over. No unaccompanied youths.
- Infants are not charged, but fire codes do not permit children to be carried through the haunts, and strollers are not allowed in the haunts.
Watch for at the event
- Strobe lights are used heavily, along with theatrical smoke and open fire effects. Guests with light or smoke sensitivities should be aware.
- Costumes are permitted. Masks and heavy makeup are not.
- Photography is permitted, but no flash inside the haunted houses. Flash and infrared can blind actors and disrupt other guests.
- Cell phones are allowed, but the event will not stop to look for lost items. Found phones are held at the ticket window for the next open night.
- Cash is not accepted at merchandise or drink booths. Card only. Some food vendors may accept cash.
- Actor contact policy: The event’s stated approach is that actors will not grab guests who do not touch them, though the event notes that unintentional bumps in dark areas can happen.
What to watch for the rest of 2026
- Haunted house themes: Pirates of Emerson has historically not published the 2026 house themes in advance. Watch the operator’s Facebook page and website for reveals ahead of the October 2 opening.
- Sellouts: The event has publicly warned that capacity limitations are in effect and that some nights sell out in advance. Buying early is the operator’s stated recommendation.
