Cheetos The Flavor of Fear Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, a Blumhouse collaboration

Cheetos has teamed with the horror studio Blumhouse for a Halloween snack designed to do more to your mouth than just flavor it. The new Cheetos Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, branded “The Flavor of Fear,” start sweet and turn hot, and reviewers who tasted them early say they leave your mouth fizzing, tingling, and numb. They arrive nationwide on August 31.

What They Taste Like

Cheetos calls the flavor Sweet Phantom Heat. Delish and Mashed, which tasted the puffs before release, describe a start of sweet cinnamon and brown sugar that gives way to building heat, along with a tingling, fizzing, and numbing feeling that grows stronger the more you eat. The reporting attributes that numbing effect to compounds found in Sichuan pepper. The bag notes no artificial dyes or flavors.

The Blumhouse Tie-In

The partnership pairs Cheetos with Blumhouse, the studio behind horror hits like Halloween, The Purge, and M3GAN. Cheetos says the collaboration brings “flavor and fear together in an unexpected new way,” and both brands are teasing more to come. “The mischief is just getting started,” the campaign says, promising additional surprises that have not been revealed. The Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs are the first drop.

Where and When

The puffs arrive nationwide on August 31 in 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce bags, according to Mashed. More detail is on the official Cheetos and Blumhouse “Flavor of Fear” campaign page.
