Los Angeles, CA — The Dark Wedding, an immersive theater show where guests choose how much to take part, runs three nights over Halloween weekend, October 30 through November 1, inside the Clifton’s building in downtown Los Angeles. The 21-and-over event has three tiers of participation, from watching with a cocktail to a seat at a multi-course dinner inside the story, and tickets run $65.87 to $193.92 with fees.

Three Ways to Take Part

The show is staged at The Sanctuary at Clifton’s, the event venue inside the Clifton’s building at 648 S. Broadway, and the audience plays the wedding guests. The ticket listing invites them to “a haunted matrimony” with “immersive dining, deadly toasts, shadowy dances, and unforgettable terror.”

“They will actively navigate the secrets of a doomed union,” said Alex McCullough of Oneida Films, who sent HAN the announcement and wrote that the show takes inspiration from “immersive theater like NYC’s Sleep No More.”

The announcement calls the show a “sandbox narrative where every room holds a secret” and gives guests three tiers of participation:

  • The Observer: watch the story play out with themed cocktails and food.
  • The Seeker: talk with the characters, look for hidden lore, solve quests, and influence where the story goes.
  • VIP Guest of Honor: a multi-course dinner that is part of the wedding’s storyline, with food and drink pairings and what the announcement calls “story-pivotal interactions.”

The tiers are there to “eliminate the pressure often felt in traditional immersive theater,” the announcement says.

Inside the Clifton’s Building

The announcement sets the story across the multi-level Clifton’s building, and the show’s press folder has photos of its rooms: a lounge built like a forest clearing with a life-size bear figure on a rock ledge, a tree trunk that rises through an atrium ringed by a balcony, a bar built around a wooden boat, a brick-walled room lit blue, and a room of glass display cases.

The Gloomlantern Faire and the Wedding Reception Afterparty

Monster Mall, a market of Halloween, goth, punk, and alternative vendors from organizer Strange Cvlt, runs a vendor market inside the show called the Gloomlantern Faire. It is a “dark carnival-style midway” with curio booths, dark artistry, oddities, and artisan goods, according to the announcement. Monster Mall also holds a separate market at Clifton’s on Saturday, October 24, from noon to 6 p.m., which its ticket listing says is its first visit to downtown Los Angeles.

After the performance each night, the venue becomes the “Wedding Reception” afterparty, with live DJs, late-night food and drink specials, and more performances. Doors open at 7 p.m., and Eventbrite lists the event’s hours as 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.
