A new Resident Evil popcorn bucket is coming to AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, and it is shaped like a bloody green organ-transplant medical-courier bag that comes with popcorn. All three major theater chains posted the movie collectible on September 1, each selling it under a different name.
The bag itself is the same across the chains. It is a soft green medical cooler with a shoulder strap, a white first-aid cross, a spray of red across the front, and the printed lines “Handle with Care,” “Keep Cool – Do Not Freeze,” and “ORGAN TRANSPLANT.” In other words, it looks like something a courier would use to move a spare kidney, not a tub of popcorn.
What each chain calls it
The three chains are selling the same collectible but branding it differently.
- AMC calls it the Critical Cargo Bag, and it includes popcorn. It is part of AMC’s “Thrills & Chills” promotion, available in theaters starting September 17 while supplies last. AMC notes that gourmet popcorn is excluded and that there are additional fees for online orders.
- Cinemark calls it the Medical Courier Replica Bag and said it is available now.
- Regal calls it the Resident Evil Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag, and it comes with a large popcorn.
All three are in-theater purchases only, while supplies last. None of the chains has published a price.
Why an organ transplant cooler
The design is not a random gross-out. In Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier making a drop-off at Raccoon City General hospital when the night falls apart around him. A bloodied organ-transplant cooler is essentially his in-story bag, which is why AMC’s post joked, “One Job: Deliver the Popcorn.”
This is the same theater-collectible wave that gave Regal an Insidious lipstick-face demon head earlier this season, and it is not even the first Resident Evil popcorn vessel of the year. Universal Studios Japan already turned the franchise into a back-worn Licker bucket. Movie and park popcorn holders have become a collectible craze of late, and horror is right in the middle of it.
The movie lands in the thick of Halloween season. Cregger’s R-rated reinvention of the video-game series opens in theaters September 18, with preview showings September 17, and was filmed for IMAX. Cregger has called it “a very bloody affair,” which the popcorn bag seems happy to advertise.
