Rye, NY — Scared by the Sound, the haunted house inside Rye Playland in Rye, New York, has four nights left in its 25th season: Sunday, October 25, and Thursday, October 29, through Saturday, October 31. General admission starts at $29, and because time slots sell out ahead of time, the haunt says to buy online.

Scared by the Sound 2026 Dates and Hours

  • Sunday, October 25: 7 to 10 p.m., plus the Hardly Haunted Matinee for kids from noon to 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 29: 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Friday, October 30: 7 to 11 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, Halloween night: 7 to 11 p.m.

The closing time is when the box office stops selling tickets, and box office tickets aren’t guaranteed. Anyone already in line with a ticket gets in.

What Is Scared by the Sound?

Scared by the Sound is a walk-through haunted house with live actors, built across more than 12,000 square feet inside Rye Playland, the amusement park on the Long Island Sound that opened in 1928. Part of the route runs under open-air pavilions, and the back half runs along the open waterfront, through crypts, morgues, tunnels and cellars. New this year are areas called the Wolves Den, His Masters Quarters and Cell Block C-D. The walk takes about 25 to 30 minutes.

Actors don’t touch guests and guests can’t touch the actors, and the haunt is open rain or shine, with parts of the route covered. Phones, cameras, flashlights and glow sticks aren’t allowed inside, though the monsters sometimes pose for free photos in the queue.

The haunt doesn’t recommend it for anyone under 12, though younger kids can go through with an adult. It’s dark and loud from the first room to the last, the haunt says.

Scared by the Sound Tickets and Prices

  • General admission: from $29 a person, for a set time window to join the line.
  • Speed Pass: from $40 a person, for a separate, shorter line. Groups of 1 to 7 with Speed Passes go through together.
  • Family 4 Pack: from $27 a guest, four general admission tickets on one order, which saves $8.
  • Groups of 16 or more get discounted tickets.

General admission guests go through in groups of at least four and may be paired with strangers. Tickets are for a set date and time, there are no refunds, and each ticket is good for one walk-through. Arrive no more than 15 minutes before your time slot, and no more than 20 minutes after it.

Hardly Haunted Matinee for Kids

On Sunday, October 25, from noon to 4 p.m., the Hardly Haunted Matinee runs the same haunted house with the lights up and the monsters toned down, plus face painting, cotton candy, Halloween treats and balloons. Tickets are required for ages 3 and up, children 2 and under are free, and strollers are welcome.

Parking and Getting There

Scared by the Sound is at Rye Playland, 1 Playland Parkway, Rye, NY 10580. Drop-off and entry are at the Fountain Plaza entrance, and parking is in Playland’s main lot for $10 a car, set and collected by Westchester County. Food trucks with light fare such as tacos and donuts are there on most nights.

Small, self-propelled wheelchairs can get through part of the route, but some outdoor sections are uneven gravel, and motorized or oversized mobility devices may not fit, the haunt says.

Scared by the Sound FAQ

Can you go through more than once? Each ticket is good for one walk-through. You can buy another ticket for a second run if any are left, but same-night re-entry isn’t guaranteed.

What if you get too scared? Tell any staff member, and you’ll be walked out through an emergency exit. There’s no re-entry and no refund, and you can wait outside for the rest of your group.

Is Scared by the Sound open in the rain? Yes. It runs rain or shine, and parts of the route are covered.

How old do you have to be? There’s no minimum age, but the haunt doesn’t recommend it for anyone under 12. The Hardly Haunted Matinee on October 25 is the version for younger kids.

How does the Speed Pass work? It costs more than general admission and puts you in a separate line with shorter waits. Speed Passes are limited and can sell out.
