The Crypt Keeper is hosting AMC’s FearFest this year, in what AMC says is the first new Crypt Keeper content in 30 years. John Kassir is back as the voice, The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero rebuilt the puppet, and FearFest’s 30th-anniversary run starts Thursday, October 1 on AMC and AMC+ with more than 650 hours of horror.
Greg Nicotero’s New Crypt Keeper Puppet
AMC Global Media named the Crypt Keeper as FearFest’s official host on September 21, for the event’s 30th anniversary. Nicotero re-created the puppet at his KNB EFX studio and directed the new Crypt Keeper segments, with Kassir voicing the character he played on Tales From the Crypt. Nicotero said the job took him back to the original show: “Having the chance to re-create Kevin Yagher’s amazing puppet at my studio KNB EFX and get the opportunity to ‘direct him’ in a series of FearFest spots was like going back in time and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.”
Tales From the Crypt premiered on HBO in 1989 and ran seven seasons. Kassir joined the show’s cast and crew at Midsummer Scream in 2019 for its 30th anniversary panel, covered in HAN’s Tales From the Crypt Turns 30.
FearFest Marathons Worth Planning Around
The month runs on franchise marathons, with Halloween to open and close it and Tales From the Crypt marathons with the host himself. All times are Eastern, as AMC lists them.
- Halloween kickoff, Thursday, Oct. 1: Halloween III: Season of the Witch at 11 a.m., then Halloween 4, Halloween 5, Halloween II, and the 1978 original at 7 p.m. Tales From the Crypt takes over at 11 p.m.
- Stephen King, Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 11: Oct. 3 runs nine films from Graveyard Shift at 6:30 a.m. to Misery after midnight, including both parts of the It miniseries, Christine, It (2017), and Carrie (2013).
- Chucky, Wednesday, Oct. 7: seven Child’s Play films from 3 p.m. into the early hours, ending with Cult of Chucky.
- Nightmare of Freddy, Monday, Oct. 12: eight Nightmare on Elm Street films, including Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and Freddy’s Dead.
- Jason vs. Everyone, Friday, Oct. 16, and Monday, Oct. 26: Friday the 13th films all day, from Jason Goes to Hell to the 1980 original. The Oct. 26 run adds the 2009 remake and Freddy vs. Jason.
- Freddy vs Jason, Sunday, Oct. 18: three Friday the 13th films, three Elm Street films, and Freddy vs Jason at 6:45 p.m.
- Fear the 80’s, Saturday, Oct. 24: The Return of the Living Dead, Cujo, The Fly, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, and Christine.
- Halloween on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31: two days of Michael Myers, with the 1978 original at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Halloween night.
- Halloween Hangover, Sunday, Nov. 1: Christine and the 1978 Halloween in the morning, then The Terminator, Predator, Men in Black, and Jurassic World: Dominion.
Final Destination gets three blocks (Oct. 5, 17, and 28), Insidious gets two (Oct. 2 and 21), and the Oct. 10 Creature Feature pairs Gremlins, The Thing, Tremors, and Lake Placid. Friday the 13th fans also have Peacock’s Crystal Lake, the prequel series about Pamela Voorhees, which premieres October 15, the day before AMC’s first Jason marathon.
New Series During FearFest
- The Terror: Devil in Silver: new episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC through the October 25 finale, and every episode streams now on AMC+. Dan Stevens stars as Pepper, a moving man wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital.
- YAGA: an AMC+ exclusive with Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, and Hudson Williams, premiering with two episodes Friday, Oct. 23, then weekly to a November 27 finale. A private investigator looking into a young heir’s disappearance in a small coastal town runs into secret lives and ancient magic.
How to Watch AMC FearFest
FearFest airs on AMC, the cable channel, and AMC says many of the movies also stream on AMC.com with a cable login or on AMC+. All seven seasons of Tales From the Crypt stream on AMC+ and Shudder.
FearFest is on AMC the TV network. AMC Theatres is running an October horror series in cinemas, Welcome to Horrorwood, which screens Friday the 13th on October 9 and 13.
