LEGO’s two small Halloween sets go on sale August 1, and taken on their own they are exactly what they look like: a $19.99 skull and a $29.99 jack-o’-lantern.
Taken next to what LEGO announced eleven days later, they look like something else. As of this fall LEGO’s Halloween lineup is a three-rung ladder — $19.99, $29.99, $119.99 — and the top rung is a brand-new adult collectible subtheme the company plans to build on.
We flagged both sets on July 6 when they first appeared on LEGO.com with names, prices, and a release date. Here are the specs LEGO has since posted, which nobody had at the time.
Halloween Pumpkin Lantern (40872) — $29.99

The build is a carved pumpkin with a hinged lid and a light brick you activate by pressing the stem, so the face glows from inside. It ships with a glow-in-the-dark ghost minifigure on a clear arm that attaches to the pumpkin so the ghost appears to float above it, plus a spider.
That light brick is the reason this one costs $10 more than the skull, and it is what makes the set function as an actual decoration rather than a shelf model. Ten dollars for a working light is not a bad trade.
Halloween Skull Candle (40883) — $19.99

Taller than the pumpkin and narrower, built as a skull with a black candle rising out of the crown. The details are where the money went: a gold tooth, two pairs of eyes (one green, one glow-in-the-dark) so you can swap the look, a spiderweb with spiders, and a bottle of spilled green poison at the base that LEGO’s own copy says is what is bringing the skull back to life.
Of the two, this is the one that looks least like a LEGO set once it is built and sitting on a table.
The ladder
Here is the thing worth noticing. On July 11, LEGO opened pre-orders on Mayor Manor 11383, a 1,420-piece, 18+, $119.99 set that LEGO’s own product copy calls “the first from the Midnight Valley Collection.” Midnight Valley is a new original-IP subtheme built on haunted, tilted, asymmetrical architecture, and LEGO fan media have compared it to Winter Village, the seasonal collection LEGO has extended to sixteen sets since 2009.

The two cheap sets are rated 9+ and sold as kids’ seasonal crafts. Mayor Manor is 18+ and sold as an adult collectible. But they land in the same aisle in the same eight-week window, and the two small ones are the only LEGO Halloween product most households will buy on impulse.
If Midnight Valley is going to work the way Winter Village works — one anchor set a year, collected over a decade — LEGO needs a steady supply of people who put a LEGO Halloween thing on a shelf for the first time. A $19.99 skull is how you get them.
Whether that is deliberate, LEGO has not said. But the shape of the lineup is the shape of a funnel.
What we still don’t know about Midnight Valley
Worth repeating from our Mayor Manor coverage, because it has not changed: LEGO has published no formal announcement naming Midnight Valley beyond the product page itself. Only one set is confirmed. No annual cadence is confirmed. Per fan media, Mayor Manor goes to general retail rather than launching as a LEGO.com exclusive, which is a deliberate break from how Winter Village sets typically debut.
So the collection is real, the strategy is legible, and the commitment is unstated.
For haunt operators
Two practical notes if you run an attraction rather than a shelf.
At $19.99 and $29.99, both sets sit in gift-shop and merch-table price territory, and both are built to be displayed rather than played with. The pumpkin’s press-the-stem light brick in particular is the kind of thing that works on a box-office counter.
And if you build sets: the Skull Candle’s swappable green and glow-in-the-dark eyes are a cheap, legible trick for showing an object “waking up.” It is a two-piece change that reads across a room. LEGO is charging $19.99 to demonstrate a lighting principle that scales to a full-size prop.
