Your dog can be Art the Clown this year. That is the single most useful thing to know about the 2026 pet costume aisle, and it is the thing none of the big retailers will tell you, because only one of them carries it.
Six retailers have their 2026 pet Halloween costumes live right now, and they are not competing on the same thing at all. Spirit Halloween is stocking actual slashers. Chewy is stocking breakfast food. Target is the cheapest by a wide margin. Here is what each one has, what it costs, and which one you should be looking at.
Spirit Halloween: the only place stocking real horror

Spirit’s pet section is small, 32 items, and it is the only one of the six that treats horror fans as the customer. Nearly every licensed costume is a flat $24.99 in sizes Pet Small through Pet XXLarge.
- Art the Clown (Terrifier) — $24.99
- Michael Myers — $24.99
- Ghost Face — $24.99
- Chucky — $24.99
- Pennywise (It) — $24.99
- Sam (Trick ‘r Treat) — $24.99

Also at $24.99: Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz, Wednesday Addams, Pugsley Addams, Harley Quinn, Scooby-Doo, Shrek, Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Toto with the basket, and SpongeBob. Deadpool runs $21.99. Non-licensed basics are cheaper: a Bat at $19.99, a Pumpkin at $19.99, a Butterfinger at $19.99, and the Tricks for Treats costume at $14.99.
Sam and Art the Clown are the two worth flagging. Neither has shown up in any other retailer’s pet lineup, and Trick ‘r Treat‘s Sam in particular almost never gets licensed merchandise at this price. If you want either one, Spirit is the only door.
The collars and leashes are the sleeper pick

Spirit also carries Buckle-Down licensed collars and leashes at $29.99, and these are the pieces that survive November 1: a Friday the 13th collar, a black-and-red Friday the 13th leash, an A Nightmare on Elm Street leash, a Jack Skellington collar from The Nightmare Before Christmas, a Barbie collar, and a Stitch collar. They cost more than most of the costumes and your dog will actually wear them year-round.
Spirit is opening 1,575 seasonal stores for 2026, so the in-store option is real. Our guide to when Spirit Halloween opens in 2026 has the timing.
Target: the cheapest lineup, and it is not close

Target’s house brand Boots & Barkley has 207 items live, and the pricing runs from $4.99 to $17.00. Nothing licensed, nothing horror, but if you are dressing a pet for one photo and one walk, this is the value play.
- Hot Dog Full Body Costume with Ketchup Toy — $17.00
- Spider Full Body Costume — $17.00
- Burrito Full Body Costume — $15.00
- Bat Wings Rider Reflective Costume — $12.00
- Chicken Full Body Costume — $12.00
- Jack-O’-Lantern Pumpkin Reflective Hoodie — $12.00
- Candy Corn Boo Dog and Cat Sweater — $12.00
- Target Shopping Cart Full Body Costume — $12.75
- Lion Halloween Headwear — $10.00
- Glitter Wings Cat Costume — $6.00
- Gnome Cat Headpiece — $5.00
- Alien Cat Headpiece — $5.00
The Candy Corn Boo sweater is the one to know about. It is a knit pull-on rather than a costume shell, so it works for a cat that will not tolerate a full-body piece, and at $12 it is the cheapest thing here that still reads as a costume in a photo. Note that it is Boots & Barkley, not Hyde & EEK! Boutique, which is where Target’s human Halloween goods live. For the rest of the store, see our Target 2026 Halloween collection guide.
The reflective pieces, the Bat Wings Rider and the Jack-O’-Lantern hoodie, are the practical picks if you are actually walking the dog at night on the 31st.
Petco: 92 costumes, a horror side door, and the small-pet outlier
Petco’s Halloween shop runs 92 pet costumes, mostly its own $5-to-$20 house line, with RUBIES licensed pieces layered on top.
House brand highlights:
- Taco Dog Costume — $20.00 (SKU 4738512, XS through 3XL)
- Hotdog, Dinosaur Hooded, Shark Hooded, Teddy Bear Illusion, Grandma Illusion — $20.00 each
- Skeleton Hoodie, Pumpkin Hoodie, Ghost, Prisoner, Lil’ Devil Hoodie, Happy Halloween Witches Sweater — $15.00 each
- Dracula Vampire Cat, Witch 2-Piece Cat, Bat Wings Cat, Fishbowl Headpiece Cat, Pickle Cat — $12.00 each
- Devil Costume Headpiece — $10.00 (SKU 4738387)
- Faux Muscles T-Shirt, Faux Bikini T-Shirt, Boo Glow in the Dark T-Shirt, This Is My Costume T-Shirt — $5.00 each
- Witch Hat Headpiece — $3.00
The licensed tier is where it gets interesting for horror fans: RUBIES Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy Krueger at $32.00, RUBIES Hocus Pocus Winifred Sanderson at $25.80, RUBIES DC Comics Batman Big Dogs at $24.00, Batman at $21.33, and Batgirl at $19.60. There is also a Blended Clothing Michael Myers “Slay All Day” dog tee at $15.00.
Petco is also the only retailer of the six with a dedicated small pet and reptile costume category. If you have a bearded dragon, this is your store.
Petco is running 10% off $50+ or 20% off $80+ with store pickup, which matters if you are buying more than one.
Chewy: the widest range, and the weirdest

Chewy’s house brand Frisco carries the deepest non-licensed range, and it prices by size, so the number you see depends on how big your dog is. Three worth calling out:
- Breakfast Skillet Costume — $11.99. A neckpiece, not a full body suit, with an appliquéd egg with a 3-D yolk and a strip of bacon, dual adjustable hook-and-loop fasteners. The cheapest genuinely funny thing in this entire roundup.
- Red Lobster Costume — $16.99 (X-Small) to $22.99 (XXX-Large). Two-piece, sizes X-Small through XXX-Large, one of the few costumes here that fits a very large dog.
- Pumpkin Jack-O’-Lantern Costume — $18.99 (Large). Two-piece plush with a matching adjustable pumpkin cap, chin strap, and glittery green leaf details at the collar. Small, Medium, and XXX-Large are out of stock as of this writing, so check your size before you plan around it.
The rest of the Frisco range: Taco $18.99, Hotdog $15.99, Glow in the Dark Skeleton $18.99 (or $13.99 as a hoodie), Bat Wings $13.99, Bumble Bee $16.99, Happy Cow $19.99, Front Walking Granny $17.99, Enchanted Witch hat and cape $18.99, Vampire Cape $12.99, Boo-Tastic Ghost Cape $16.99, Pumpkin Cat Ride-On with detachable plush toy $15.99, and bandana costumes from $9.99.
For licensed horror, Chewy has two: a Rubie’s Beetlejuice costume at $5.64, which is the cheapest licensed item anywhere in this roundup, and a Fetch For Pets Chucky costume at $14.56. Third-party brands Pet Life and Pets First sit at the top of Chewy’s range at $24.99 to $29.99.

PetSmart: 191 results, almost all Rubie’s
PetSmart’s lineup is essentially a Rubie’s Pet Shop catalog, 191 results, and it skews Disney and cartoon rather than horror. Pricing is the least consistent of the six, running $9.99 to $39.99.
- Cruella DeVille — $39.99
- Ursula — $39.99
- Goofy — $34.99
- Pizza Slice — $33.99
- Godzilla — $32.49
- Giraffe — $32.99
- Garfield — $31.99
- Prisoner — $26.39
- Smurfs — $25.19
- Dumbo — $24.99
- Taco — $22.39
- Toy Story Woody costume and toy bundle — $22.99
- Belle costume and toy bundle — $19.99
- Batman — $17.79, Superman — $16.99, Supergirl — $16.59
- Shrek — $18.79
- Shark Fin — $9.99
If you are shopping for a kid’s-movie pairing rather than a horror one, PetSmart has the deepest bench. If you want a slasher, skip it.
Amazon and the rest
Amazon carries all of the above brands plus a long tail of unbranded sellers, and it is the fallback if a size is out of stock at the source. The trade-off is that sizing on unbranded pet costumes is unreliable and returns during October are slow. Buy from the retailer that actually makes the thing where you can.
How to actually pick one
Measure first. Pet costume sizing is not standardized across brands. A Frisco Large and a Rubie’s Large are not the same garment. Every retailer here publishes a size chart keyed to neck, chest girth, and back length. Use it.
Full-body or neckpiece. Full-body costumes look better in photos and are tolerated for less time. Neckpieces, bandanas, and headpieces (Petco’s $3 witch hat, Chewy’s $11.99 breakfast skillet, Target’s $5 cat headpieces) get you most of the effect with a fraction of the fight.
Cats are a different problem. Target’s $6 Glitter Wings and $5 headpieces and Petco’s $12 two-piece cat costumes are built for cats specifically. Most “dog and cat” full-body costumes are dogs first.
If you are walking at night, buy reflective. Target’s Bat Wings Rider and Jack-O’-Lantern hoodie are the only reflective options in this roundup.
Watch the size, not the price. The out-of-stock pattern this early in the season is already showing up in the middle sizes. If your dog is a Medium, buy now.
Why the horror IPs are only at Spirit
There is a reason Art the Clown and Sam are Spirit-only. Every other retailer here is a pet store first, and pet stores license family IP because that is what sells to their existing customer. Spirit is a Halloween store that happens to sell pet costumes, so its licensing runs through its horror catalog instead.
That split shows up elsewhere in the season too. Michael Myers is now doing quadruple duty across 2026 retail: Spirit’s $349.99 animatronic, a $31.99 Target sweatshirt, a $70 Monster High Skullector doll, and now a $24.99 dog costume. He is the one classic slasher with confirmed presence in four separate retail categories this year.
Art the Clown is the newer story. Terrifier has been a fixture in theme park haunts for two seasons now, most recently in Halloween Horror Nights’ Downtown Clowntown scare zone, but this is the first time the character has turned up in mass retail at a price a casual fan will pay. A $24.99 dog costume is a bigger licensing signal than it looks.
All six lineups are live now: Spirit Halloween, Target, Petco, Chewy, PetSmart, and Amazon.
