HBO Max’s Halloween section for October, named Horror Comes Home, sorts the service’s horror movies and series into rows by theme, including Stephen King adaptations, The Conjuring films, and a family row with Beetlejuice and Scooby-Doo. Evil Dead Burn joined on October 2, and a three-part documentary series, The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story, starts October 11.

The Rows, the Essential Horror Channel, and the Price

The section is a page on HBO Max headed Halloween & Horror Movies and Shows, with matching rows on the home screen, and HBO Max says it runs throughout October. It groups movies and series that are on the service under row names. The page has six rows: Must-Scream Horror, Stephen King: The King of Fears, Catch Up on the Conjuring Universe, Unleash the Monster, Haunted Hall of Fame, and Family-Friendly Scares. HBO Max’s announcement names three more, A Killer Movie Marathon, Creature Features, and What’s Around The Corner.

HBO Max also added a channel inside the app, Essential Horror, which plays a mix of series and films from its horror catalog. Plans start at $10.99 a month, by the price on HBO Max’s Halloween page.

  • Evil Dead Burn (October 2): the film is streaming only on HBO Max. A woman who has lost her husband stays with his family at their secluded home, and one by one they turn into Deadites. Sébastien Vaniček directed it, and Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi produced it.
  • The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story (Sundays, October 11 to 25): a three-part HBO documentary series about the 1985 killing of Dorothy Lou Thompson, who owned a pet cemetery outside New Orleans. Episodes are at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on HBO and HBO Max on October 11, October 18, and October 25.
  • Backrooms (since September 25): HBO Max’s announcement calls it A24’s highest-grossing film, in the United States and worldwide. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass, and I covered it in my Backrooms article.
  • Also streaming now: Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, The Strangers: Chapter 2, and Undertone.
